From Scraps to Soil: Everything You Need to Know About Compost This International Compost Awareness Week

Most of us have thrown a banana peel in the bin without a second thought. No judgement. But that small moment adds up, and International Compost Awareness Week exists to show us why it matters more than we realise.

What Is ICAW?

ICAW, short for International Compost Awareness Week, is the world's largest compost education initiative. It runs every first full week of May and brings together communities, councils, and everyday people to promote composting and organic waste recycling across Australia and beyond.

The goal is simple: help people understand that compost is not just garden mulch. It is a valuable organic resource that keeps waste out of the system and puts nutrients back into the ground where they belong.

Why It Actually Matters

When food scraps go to landfill, they produce methane, a greenhouse gas significantly more harmful than carbon dioxide. Composting diverts that organic matter back into the soil, reduces harmful emissions, and supports healthier ecosystems. Even a small backyard compost bin or worm farm makes a measurable difference.

The benefits of composting are well documented. Healthier soil, reduced pesticide use, improved drought resilience, and a direct contribution to sustainable development goals recognised by the UN.

What Composting and Reclaimed Timber Have in Common

Here is where Mulbury fits in. We do not make compost. But we share the same philosophy entirely.

Composting says: do not send organic matter to landfill. Return it to the cycle. Mulbury says: do not send timber to waste. Reuse it and turn it into something that lasts.

Both are about refusing to discard what still has value. Every Mulbury frame is made from reclaimed timber that would otherwise have been thrown away, because we believe materials deserve a second life just as much as your food scraps do.

This International Compost Awareness Week, start a compost bin, find a local event, or simply make one different choice. Small actions, genuinely compounded, change things.

And if you want your home to reflect those same values, you know where to find us.
