R U OK? The Small Question Worth Asking Properly

A Small Question Can Make a Big Difference

R U OK? Day 2026 falls on Thursday 10 September. This national day of action reminds Australians to check in with the people around them, not just once a year, but whenever someone may be struggling with life.

It was founded in 2009 by Gavin Larkin, who wanted to honour his father and help prevent other families from experiencing similar loss. Today, the suicide prevention charity continues to inspire and empower people to meaningfully connect because a conversation can change a life.

How to Ask R U OK?

You do not need to be one of the world’s great conversationalists or a mental health professional. No need for a clipboard. You simply need to make time and genuinely care.

The official R U OK? conversation tips follow four simple steps:

  1. Ask R U OK? Choose a comfortable moment and mention any changes you have noticed.
  2. Listen. Give them your full attention without interrupting, judging or trying to fix everything before the kettle has boiled.
  3. Encourage action. Ask what might help and suggest speaking with trusted support services or a health professional if needed.
  4. Check in. Staying connected matters. Send a message or make another call in the days ahead.

Someone going through a tough time may not open up immediately. That is okay. A genuine conversation still shows them that they have someone in their corner.

Mulbury’s Small Part in a Bigger Conversation

At Mulbury, we believe sustainability is about more than looking after materials. It is also about looking after people and the communities around us.

Sharing the R U OK? message is one small way we can help promote mental health and wellbeing. Whether it happens beside a workbench, over a coffee or while packing an order, taking a moment to ask “Are you OK?” can create the space where people feel comfortable enough to talk.

So, this R U OK Day, think of someone you know and start a conversation. Tea is optional. Your attention is the important bit.

Do you think a simple framed memory, art or memorabilia would make them happy? Mulbury is the right place to help you with that 💚
