How We Approach Sustainable Living at Mulbury

Every Australian throws away around 2,000 kilograms of waste each year. It’s a confronting number, but it’s also the reason February matters. This month is about tackling big issues like climate change, waste and energy, not through grand gestures, but through better everyday choices that actually stick.

At Mulbury, those choices begin with what already exists.

Instead of starting with new materials, we source used hardwood. Timber that has already lived a life and might otherwise end up as waste. Old floorboards, beams and offcuts are given a second chance, transformed into picture frames and homeware designed to last for decades, not trends.

Making things locally is a deliberate decision. Manufacturing in Melbourne means fewer transport miles, fewer emissions, and more skills and jobs kept within our community. It also means we can stay hands-on with how things are made, not just what they look like at the end.

Energy matters too. Eighty-five percent of our workshop’s energy is powered by solar, because sustainability doesn’t stop at materials. How something is made is just as important as what it’s made from.

From biodegradable and compostable packaging to thoughtful shipping methods, each step is considered with the aim of treading a little lighter. And when it comes to waste, we do our best to ensure there is none. Timber offcuts and sawdust are reused, recycled, or given away, finding new purpose rather than heading to landfill.

Sustainable living isn’t about finding one perfect solution. It’s about continuing to improve, continuing to innovate, and choosing to make things that don’t need constant replacing. It’s about slowing down consumption and valuing what’s already here.

That’s how Mulbury marks the National Sustainable Living Festival. Not with big claims or lofty promises, but by turning big ideas into everyday actions and quietly doing the work, one frame at a time.
